      <image:title>Blog - Managing difficult emotions - Anything else is a feeling</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are feeling anything else other than the 7 basic emotions described above, it is a feeling. Feelings in contrast to emotions are created by the brain, resulting from thoughts which interpret personal experiences based on our memories of past events. For example, if we are presenting in a meeting and we see one of our colleagues’ frown and appear distracted, we may perceive that they are passing negative judgement on our work, perhaps because this has happened to us in the past. Our feelings are often based on ingrained and subjective patterns of thinking and behaving. As such they are subjective and based on our perceptions rather than facts, therefore they are not always a true reflection of reality. In the example above there could be many different reasons for why our colleague is frowning, which could have nothing to do with us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Managing difficult emotions - There are 7 basic emotions</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Paul Ekman’s research there are 7 emotions which are experienced and recognisable by all cultures across the world. These are happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, fear, and contempt.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Managing difficult emotions - Emotions are a behavioural response</image:title>
<image:caption>The 7 basic emotions evolved as behavioural responses, designed to motivate us to take action and keep us safe. They are a physiological response to an external stimulus and therefore originate from and are felt in the body. For example, when we lived as nomadic tribes thousands of years ago and came across a bear, seeing the bear triggered a fear response, motivating us to either run away or stand and fight. This type of response is still felt today, for example if we accidentally step into the road in-front of oncoming traffic, the sight of the cars triggers the same response, motivating us to run to the safety of the pavement.</image:caption>

Maybe it was making up stories, walking in nature, dancing, painting or playing with animals? Think back to what excited you and look for ways to bring parts of your inner child into different areas of your life, whether its dancing to the radio as if no one is watching, taking a painting class or going for a regular walk.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - About me</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a lawyer with 20 years’ experience in the corporate world. I returned from my second maternity leave raring to get stuck into my new role, full of enthusiasm and ambition. Within 18 months however I was burnt out, frustrated and exhausted from trying to balance full-time work and being a mother to two young children. After a lot of thought I decided to take a sabbatical, taking time out to spend with my family and to study for the pure pleasure of learning (something I had always promised myself I would do when I retired or won the lottery). It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Passion led me here</image:title>
<image:caption>This journey really ignited my passion for mental health and wellbeing and I was struck by how little as a society we understand about emotional wellbeing, despite the serious impact it can have on health. I’m passionate about mental health in all its guises and my mission is to empower people to embrace their emotions and decode their messages so that they can learn to thrive in every aspect of their lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - Qualifications</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a qualified Co-Active Training Institute Coach, which is described as the “gold standard” of coaching by the Institute of Coaching, a Harvard Medical School affiliate that has linked the four cornerstones of the Co-Active Model to evidence-based scientific research. It is an experiential model of coaching, which focuses on coaching the whole person irrespective of whether the topic relates to work or their personal life. I am also a qualified trauma informed equine coach, with a diploma in equine facilitated human development (EFHD), from IFEEL Qualifications (International Foundation of Experiential Education and Learning). EFHD is a form of coaching that works with horses to help people to make deep and lasting changes in their lives. I have always loved horses since being a small child, their grace and majesty provides a deep sense of calm that touches the very soul. Just being around them has always provided me with a sense of wonder and inner peace.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a species horses are highly sensitive and attuned, with an amazing ability to sense subtle changes in the underlying emotional and physical environment. It is this ability which makes horses such a key part of the learning process, as they act as a mirror for human emotions, reflecting what people are feeling in the moment in an authentic and non-judgemental way. This helps to increase people’s self-awareness of their actions and behaviours in a relaxed and safe environment, providing the foundation for behavioural change.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Equine Assisted Coaching</image:title>
<image:caption>Most communication in life is non-verbal, yet people have been taught to focus largely on verbal communication and in doing so have forgotten the power of intuition and emotion. Horses live in the moment and their outward behaviour always expresses what they are feeling, thus they always act authentically. They provide a calming presence, helping people to become more mindful of the present moment. Horses become uneasy and unwilling to connect with people who are incongruent (i.e. when a person’s internal state and feelings do not match their behaviour, for example because they are trying to cover emotions such as fear or anger with a false appearance of calm).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Scientifically it has been proven that it is possible to rewire our brains by changing our thoughts, via a process called neuroplasticity. However, this can be a difficult process without support since our brains default to our old habits and thought patterns. Coaching provides a supportive environment in which the coach works with the client to challenge existing thought patterns to help the client cultivate new behaviours.</image:caption>
